Memorial Day was first celebrated on May 5th and then changed to May 30th. Decades later, Congress passed the Uniform Holiday Act declaring Memorial Day as the last Monday in May which established a 3-day weekend for federal employees. This act also declared Memorial Day as a federal holiday.

In 1966, Congress and President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, N.Y., the “birthplace” of Memorial Day.
